New on my radar: Tombs

Looking through some upcoming shows I found a band named Tombs who have a pretty decent thing going on right now, beings as they are touring around with the likes of Pelican and Wolves in the Throne Room.
I imagine Wolves In The Throne Room is alot better live than on record and the same goes for Pelican to a lesser extent. Something about

These guys have a recent video to drum up some support for a release this tuesday.
This song really reminds me of Killing Joke mixed with Neurosis/Isis. It’s actually really hard to pin these guys down. The video is pretty standard performance material with pretty much zero concept.
Tombs’ will also be performing live on WFMU 91.1 on Thursday, February 12th as part of “Diane’s Kamikaze Fun Machine” show. This show airs every Thursday from 3:00 to 5:00 pm EST. Tombs’ set can be streamed live at WFMU.org.

Hiya! I’m going through your blog, catching up… so excuse the late comments :)… I love this Pelican track, thanks! Ok, so here’s my problem… help me out… the tunes are great on a lot of what you got up here, but once I get to the vocals I hate it. That happens to me in hardcore/grindcore/metal music. I think that’s why I trend towards experimental/electro/noise. I just hate that growl, if you’re gonna sing then sing and if you’re gonna make some noisy vocalizations then do that but don’t make it singing. Am I crazy? Maybe I’m just an old skool punk girl who can’t be cured. And point me to some new music, please! xoxoxo

That Pelican track is so good, I never want it to end. I used to play similar music with friends just jammin.
As far as the vocal thing is concerned, I hope I don’t sound all sexist, but, it’s really a female thing I think. I think it’s sooooo cute when my girlfriend says to me in a very concerned voice, “listen, I don’t know if you can tell, but that’s not music that you are listening to, they aren’t even singing”.
Another factor is that oftentimes, the guitars are dropped, the tones are dissonant and it’s hard to sing and sound tough. Tough used to be a word I used to describe bands all the time. “Have you heard the new Terror album? It’s fuckin tough”. A really common
Actually, I think I need a blog post to really explain the appeal of possible permanent vocal chord damage. I’ve been thinking about it for awhile.

Uh no. There’s plenty of punk music with loads of testosterone and actual singing in it, and not just pop/punk either. The Dead Kennedys, the Buzzcocks, Sham69, Bum Kon, and perhaps the best of old skool punk, the Misfits are fine examples of singing and even some shouting which I find acceptable (!) but not that horrible noise that has surfaced post Metallica in American music.
That’s my argument and I’m sticking to it :-p
As for what’s “music” well, I’ll not go as far as your gf, given my love for Rolo Tomassi! (which has a fair amount of screaming but not in the growly way, maybe there has to be more interesting music going on to justify it?)
xoxo,
