Welcome to Under the Dog. This is a musical webzine with a focus on the more abrasive styles of music(read:metal/punk/hardcore), along with some interesting videos and links that generally fall in the WTF category. We post full bootleg concerts every Wednesday and have new mp3s on the weekdays. Click here to goto the main page.

Thanks for visiting!
Let me begin this post by stating that I am not 100% certain of all the legalities involving the use of these programs to acquire free music nor will I begin to start an ethics discussion on whether it’s stealing or not. There are entire blogs dedicated to the subject on the ethics of downloading.
While there are alot of programs that you can use download music like the ones mentioned in the title of this article, make no mistake, you can get busted sharing music on these networks as the RIAA and MPAA have several tactics to catch you infringing on their beloved copyright. Let us also not forget that you can also get viruses and if you aren’t careful or you might accidentally share sensitive information which could lead to your identity being stolen. If you still feel you must use a P2P network program I do have 2 suggestions. Forget limewire and bearshare, use Frostwire, it’s open source and lightweight. Or use a bittorrent program. To be quite honest, bittorrent is the safest way to go as you can encrypt your traffic and use tor networks so the RIAA/MPAA can’t see what you are downloading and sharing. But for users with 56k connections or people who only want 1 song your best bet is to use mp3 search engines or google hacks.
So here is my round up of several ways to acquire free much music without the use of P2P programs.
The old school hacker method.
Not actual hacking, (Hacks is meant as this definition. “A Hack is a modification of a program or device to give the user access to features otherwise were unavailable to them. ” Taken from Wikipedia). This uses google to search for mp3s using a little bit of code to narrow your search. All you have to do is copy and paste this code and replace Nirvana with whatever you are looking for.
-inurl:(htm|html|php) intitle:”index of” +”last modified” +”parent directory” +description +size +(wma|mp3) “Nirvana”
This method can produce some surpising results. I have found entire live sets of punk bands from the 70’s and 80’s. YMMV though because new things get put on and removed from servers all the time.
Now I know what you are probably thinking that you cannot remember this entire search string and I can’t just keep finding this post every time I want to download a song. That is why there are a few things that do this for you.
http://g2p.org
G2P does the exact same search as the search string but you can easily bookmark the site.
Google Hacks
Google hacks is a nice little application that will search for all sorts of stuff including mp3s and ebooks and will open the results in your default browser.
Using Rapidshare to find music.
Alot of mp3 blogs use rapidshare to host entire albums. Martin over at ghacks runs a pretty cool tech blog and has a list of 5 Rapidshare search engines. Go ahead and click the link and see what rapidshare has to offer.
Bitlet
Bitlet is a bittorrent client that runs right in your browser. All you do is search a tracker like the pirate bay for what you want and then put the url of the page the torrent is hosted on and it downloads it strait to you. Of course the pirate bay has more than just music so you could use this for whatever you want. Another neat feature of bitlet is the westream feature which lets you listen to music contained within torrent files without saving them.
Mp3 Search Engines
There are lots of mp3 search engines. Some let you download and some only let you listen and make playlists.
Wuzam
Wuzam is definitely the winner for weirdest name but it does have one really awesome feature. It allows you to embed the mp3 in your blog posts and anywhere else that javascript is allowed(sorry no myspace afaik). Example below.
The Hype Machine
The Hype Machine only indexes mp3 blogs but does let you listen right in their site. In order to download you have to go to the blog post in reference, but who cares when this site literally references 1000+ posts a day.
Project Playlist
Project Playlist is something you have probably seen before on somebodies myspace. They look through the internet looking for mp3s just like all the other searchengines, but you can embed the playlist anywhere which is a good feature.
Other Search Engines
There are a ton of other search engines out there and I am not going to take the time to review every single one of them. That would be pointless as they all do the same thing, so here are a few to keep you happy.
