Dogcast! Under The Dog Podcast #5 A Mixtape For Tarty Tart
Podcast: Play in new window | Download
This is my first mixtape pod in the sense that I am making a mixtape for a friend and posting it online, except I have really put anything on tape as I don’t even have the equipment to do such a thing.
It’s dedicated to my friend Tarty Tart who writes the blog Love Shack, Baby. Check her out, buy music, subscribe to my feed here and enjoy the Dogcast!
Track Selection
So the first group of tracks are all female singers with the exception of the Aus-Rotten track which has a guy and girl singer and the same for Smart Went Crazy.
Teenage Jesus and the Jerks – Orphans
I picked this track as my opener because it seemed like the best opener, a nice way of saying some of this music will be challenging.
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum – Phthisis
I chose this track because Tart always says she likes heavy music but hates growl singing, same goes for the stolen babies track.
Ponytail – Celebrate The Body Electric (It Came From An Angel)
I picked this one because I think Tart would like it, and I think she needs to be exposed to more challenging music.
See Sleepytime notes
I chose this track because Tart is a feminist and this track is a feminist anthem of sorts.
The previous song is kinda depressing so I thought I would cheer it up a little bit with some Sleater-Kinney though I understand the lyrics are a bit tongue in cheek.
Smart Went Crazy – I Liked You Better When You Were Sick
This track and next one were chosen because Tart needs to hear more music from Washington D.C. because it’s all amazing.
Owls – What Horse You Rode In On
See above and also, a Chicago band Tart may not be familiar with.
I played this one because Tart doesn’t like bluegrass and alt-country enough.
Portland band, really nice guys, great music.
Pigeon John – Money Back Guarantee
Tart doesn’t listen to enough hip-hop so what better way to sneak a song in then with a Pixies sample!
Dismemberment Plan – Gyroscope
Another D.C. track and an awesome band Tart needs to know and love.
I’m not sure if Tart is familiar with Walter Schrieffels and his body of music
Against Me! – Baby, I’m an Anarchist
Because Tart is a Vulgar Socialist and Statist. But I still love her regardless!
I chose this track for exposure and because she’s an indie rocker, and nothings gonna stop her.
I found this track appropriate because she likes to over share on twitter sometimes, but that’s fine with me.

This is a great mix, except for the Nickel Creek track. What can I say? I’m a bluegrass purist. I get Nickel Creek, I just can’t do it.

I don’t like the entire Nickel Creek catalog, in fact, the track I posted is probably their best one of the them all.

Oh man!! You even made me like Nickle Creek :) … but honestly, thank you so much, darlin, xoxo
I love that first track, Teenage Jesus and the Jerks – Orphans …. what a great way to start such a kindness.
Highlights:
Stolen Babies – Awful Fall … the lyrics were awesome and the delivery, that was brilliant!
Aus Rotten – The Second Rape … of course, because if you need a really angry song (and for fuck’s sake, of course you do) then that’s the thing to get really pissed off about. Good call!
Sleater-Kinney – Modern Girl … was totally not the track I would expect from Sleater-Kinney! But I’d forgotten that one, and it was lovely to hear it, thanks!
Owls – What Horse You Rode In On … well, this one is perhaps the highlight of the highlights. This is the Kinsella Bro’s who are wonderful, indeed from Chicago. Owen Kinsella is a solo artist now, just “Owen” and I keep missing his gigs but his new album is thrilling me! I forgot about Owls, had heard them or maybe even an earlier incarnation of them years and years ago. That tune is MADE for fucking, yummm!
Nurses – Technicolor …. I can think of three or four bands that have bits of sounds like them but Nurses have melded it all together into a unified sound that supersedes them all. Nice find!!! Must investigate more!
Hahaha That Against Me is a song that I’ve sung along to at the top of my lungs more times than I care to admit to, late a night in alleys and outside bars on cold nights :)
And of course, Tom Lehrer… naughty, naughty! I adore you, Jesse Priest! xoxoxo
