Pure, Unadulterated Punk, OR: Automatic For The Individual?

April 12th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Unclassifiable

image

Tonight, I lie Under The Dog and address punk rock fashion(punk again? Yr an emo kid wishing.) So. Last week I messed up and forgot the sex pistols when talking about rebellion in rock music. How could I possibly pretend to have knowledge of this genre?

Answer? I don’t care if I mess it up. The Sex Pistols have more in common with the Backstreet Boys than Iggy Pop. I’ve been fairly clear on my stance on hXc versus ’77 styles. Either way though. Anyone can be a waster and rip their jeans. It takes a Jello Biafra to bring intellectual commentary(however much I vehemently disagree with his ideas) to the genre of Sid Viscious and Darby Crash(yes I know Darby had ideas, but he’s dead by his own hand, and his ideas were fascist, so he’s at least half idiot.).

I grew up in a stranger setting than most fans of punk music. As an outsider of everybody(For my christian youth group I was the freak who dressed weird and listened to *Gasp!* NON-CHRISTIAN MUSIC!!!!!!!!! And to the punks I was, a friggin christian. Duh.), I found the whole thing stupid.

The punk kids had patches and leather jackets and all that shit that everyone wore. I always thought they looked like the opposite of what they wanted to be. How rebellious is it to pick one of 7 hairstyles, wear the same clothes as all yr friends and smell bad?

I always thought Sonic Youth had it right. Not only did they not play what people were expecting, but they did it artistically and intelligently. Also NoMeansNo, who proved you can be expert musicians and still make challenging, fun and cerebral punk.

Why is it that certain bands are always on every punk uniform? I’ve always wondered why the misfits are on every jacket. They’re so overrepresented it’s silly, although I do like The SubHumAns’ Worlds Apart.

What am I trying to say? Think for yrself. Like music because you like it, not because of the genre it’s in, or if someone you look up to likes it. Being an individual means not having to look to anyone for anything. Being an individual means being strong and secure in yrself. Be yrself, dammit!

Stay out of the rain and under the dog!

Holy Origin Story!

Hey there! Do I have a blog to get off my chest. My boss Jesse tends to focus on artists that are breaking ground and not towing lines, and I will do that too, but I listen to a lot of music, and 99.9% of it happened in the 60′s, 70′s, 80′s and 90′s.

Many artists are past their prime, have died or killed themelves. They obviously aren’t able to be covered by new music blogs, as Under The Dog is and has been. I just mainly wanted to give an Origin Story, with an obvious nod to superhero comics. This is because I’m a musical vigilante. Or whatever.

I mainly started out listening to very young, when I was 9 years old. I was a christian, so contradictions were still able to occupy my brain at the time. Then a certain obsidian colored album was released by my band du jour, which I hated. Hated.

Coincidentally, the same day I returned my copy to the store, I saw a certain music hustling deodorant to the teenage youth, and was drawn into this type of music instantly. Now I find many people who argue with me about this band, but they had artistic integrity.

I was 9 years old. The blonde lead singer dressed a certain way, so I started cutting holes in my jeans and wearing tattered flannel. He talked about the bands Flipper, Butthole Surfers, The Wipers, Black Flag, so on and so I listened to them, and got into bands like Minor Threat, The Dead Kennedys, Which got me into Fugazi.

Fugazi was it. They are my true Origin Story revelation. Every Dischord band was now my favorite band. I think that underground music is good just for this branching quality. I love music and I hope you take the time to listen to the mp3′s here and branch yrself out.

If you like hearing my story, post a comment, find me on facebook, twitter, or my music on myspace. Signing off, this is Geoffro!

RE: Recent Silence

Yeah, I’ve been lazy and haven’t put up a new show in a few weeks. Sorry bout that. That’s the disadvantage of the one man show, it’s hard to take any time off.

I was going to do a show yesterday, but my plans were thwarted when one of the myriad of other clients hosted on the same server as me was DDOSed and they moved me to another server and changed the ip address thus causing time-outs for over 24 hours. But that is over now. YAY!

So a new episode is forthcoming, after I get off of work. It will be awesome. I plan on writing more articles as well.

So untill then google Captain Beyond and become familiar with one of the shows acts. In the meantime… Goodnight and good luck.

Sorry folks, it’s a one person show.

Hey Folks, I am on a small hiatus right now as I move houses. My new should have office space for me or else I’ll just keep my bedroom office going. But soon enough, I’ll be back on track with the weekly podcast.

Hard Drive Failure

June 14th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Unclassifiable

http://content.bored.com/photos/oh_shit.jpg

I seem to have major problems with external hard drives, I just destroyed my second one, my first one was damaged by dropping it while it was writing something. 500 gigs of data, mostly music and the like, I felt it was a pretty good piece of machinery, but sadly, I broke it.

I bought another one pretty quick afterwards. I was very careful with it and I never moved it or anything like that. Now this one has the problem of not responding after a few minutes of use so I am able to recover the data, 2-5 gigs at a time. Unfortunately, I can’t use my laptop to do this because it screw up all the other usb stuff for god knows why though I think I may be overloading my usb ports with usb hubs. So I have to use an old desktop that I go from Fry’s that was outdated when I bought it. I now use it to seed torrents, mainly out of print stuff, creative commons political materials and fan edits of movies.

Did I mention I don’t have a monitor for it? I have to VNC it all the time, since I don’t really use it except to run one task, it’s not that big a deal but it is now complicating my job of moving 500 gigs, 2-5 at a time. To further complicate that, 200 of those gigs are my music collection and thus is making it difficult to post any mp3s. So I gots to take a little break while I handle the crisis at home. Please understand and I’ll hopefully write some content that will just wait for mp3s.

In the meantime, enjoy this totally rad Pharcyde

Nintendo Wii Punchout! Want!

Oh my goodness, usually I am against rehashes of old classics as they are usually never as good as my expectations and I’m kind of a snob like that. This time around, I fully and wholeheartedly support the Punchout! remake except for one fledgling detail. The absence of Iron Mike Tyson,

Immature title I guess but nothing I really want to hate on, I mean, I did publish the title didn’t I? Anyways, this is some animation made from recycled paper so it’s worth a watch, it’s only 2 minutes.

Inglorious Basterds Trailer

February 11th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Unclassifiable

IngloriousBastards Starring: Brad Pitt, Eli Roth, BJ Novak, Mike Myers and Michael Fassbender. Directed By: Quentin Tarantino.

What style is everyone going to say he’s ripping off now? What’s with the nu- music? I hope this film has a period specific soundtrack or I could see this as being Tarantino’s “Gangs of New York”.

New Atmosphere video "You” (sort of)

February 10th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Unclassifiable

I like this song, it really shows how versatile Slug is. I don’t know that I like it enough to make 2 separate videos for one song, but I’m not certain of the backstory on this one.

Alternate Version

Old Version

Finger Boards? Really? It’s a bold move for a and I think I prefer the alternate version more, but props to the original

Props to Nah Right for scooping this gem.

Bo Jackson Run + The Punk Group “Tight End Wide Receiver”

February 1st, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Unclassifiable

In honor of the superbowl, I present you, the Bo Jackson run. Oh  to be 10 again.

Fun facts about me, I have never watched a superbowl or any NFL game in it’s in entirety. I played little league but quit because the coach never put me in the game. I really wanted to be good and I quit one day in tears after the coach flat out told me I was never gonna get any field time.

Here is a of a Portland band called “The Punk Group”. It’s called Tight End Wide Receiver and it pretty much sums up my bitterness about my athletic non-abilities.

Warning: It starts with a commercial.

A non-edited version is on their myspace page.

I don’t talk a lot about it on this blog because I do enough of that in writing the blogs and maintaining the websites for my other projects that I just want to talk about something else.

All of my projects have taken my attention from Under the Dog but I plan on doing more here this year and trying to outsource some of the writing when I find people who are as passionate about aggressive, abrasive, dissonant, emotional and brutally honest music as I am.

But in order for you to believe me when I say I am super busy I feel I should show my readers some of the stuff I do. I (along with my colleague Carson) have been setting up concerts, filming the bands and producing DVDs. We have done 4 3 day marathon shoots in 4 cities and just had the release party for the 1st of 4 DVDs.

I am also putting out a few rock records in the next couple months including His Name Shall Breath and The Squealers as well as some other things in the works.

Here is a cut from our first release.

Slumdog Millionaire Review

December 31st, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Unclassifiable

http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Film/Pix/pictures/2008/12/11/slumdog460.jpgSumming up the entire movie in one word:

Brutal.

Not Brutal ala “The Passion”, Hostel or Audition. But brutal in it’s honesty with the portrayal of ghetto life in India, child exploitation and the twisted nature of some individuals. Brutal in the content department with one of the few scenes in film that gave my gag reflex a run, made me wince and even gave me the horror movie scared startled feeling that comes with a good fright flick.

The beauty of the whole film is that noone is perfect. Even the main character makes morally wrong decisions, just as everyone has in their life. Much like 28 days later, the film really shows you that the enemy is not always the obvious and that even good natured people can make poor decisions.

The editing is swift and movie moves right along, cutting back and forth between childhood recollections and present day, but for all you people that have a hard time with anything other than you standard 3 act script, don’t worry about having to ask yourself where in chronology this particular event is taking place. You will be able to follow along just fine.

I paid 15 bucks to see this with my girlfriend. We can goto the bourgeoisie cinema for free because she’s a cog in the machine, but unfortunately, they don’t usually play movies with those darn words at the bottom of the screen and don’t star douchebags, It was worth every single penny.

2 funny things I read on the IMDB boards…

I always thought of this movie as the illegitimate child of City of God and Forrest Gump in India.

Damn Hipster Forrest Gump"

My oh my, the year is almost over and I have no top lists, mainly because I just don’t understand the hype associated with a top list. But I digress, I’m just here to show some blog love and maybe point out a few top lists…

BUDDYHEAD’s Meathead writes an open letter to Marilyn Manson

Pitchforks top 50, metal is overlooked :::tear:::

Deathkiller, A Love Story

Is it really a good idea to keep a shark tank next to a waterslide????

Ridiculously huge list of top ten lists

Word Association and our soon to be former president[obvious]

R.I.P. Majel Barrett Roddenberry, to bad you will never see J.J. Abrams Version of Start Trek

Liberals elect their dream president and then whine about his choice of pastor.

What is this strange ?

Warner Brothers are bunch of big dumb jerks or something…

December 21st, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Unclassifiable

for deleting every music of theirs off of youtube and getting everything with warner brothers music as background music deleted. Shame on them.

Gone are the Red Hot Chili Peppers, gone are Linkin Park and the biggest casualty of them all… MADONNA!

It basically amounts to extortion of money from youtube which has a limited revenue stream i.e. can’t pay all of it’s bills. I’d call for a boycott, but most of my audience already doesn’t listen to any of that garbage.
