This is my first mixtape pod in the sense that I am making a mixtape for a friend and posting it online, except I have really put anything on tape as I don’t even have the equipment to do such a thing.
It’s dedicated to my friend Tarty Tart who writes the blog Love Shack, Baby. Check her out, buy music, subscribe to my feed here and enjoy the Dogcast!
Track Selection
So the first group of tracks are all female singers with the exception of the Aus-Rotten track which has a guy and girl singer and the same for Smart Went Crazy.
Teenage Jesus and the Jerks – Orphans
I picked this track as my opener because it seemed like the best opener, a nice way of saying some of this music will be challenging.
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum – Phthisis
I chose this track because Tart always says she likes heavy music but hates growl singing, same goes for the stolen babies track.
Ponytail – Celebrate The Body Electric (It Came From An Angel)
I picked this one because I think Tart would like it, and I think she needs to be exposed to more challenging music.
Stolen Babies – Awful Fall
See Sleepytime notes
Aus Rotten – The Second Rape
I chose this track because Tart is a feminist and this track is a feminist anthem of sorts.
Sleater-Kinney – Modern Girl
The previous song is kinda depressing so I thought I would cheer it up a little bit with some Sleater-Kinney though I understand the lyrics are a bit tongue in cheek.
Smart Went Crazy – I Liked You Better When You Were Sick
This track and next one were chosen because Tart needs to hear more music from Washington D.C. because it’s all amazing.
Owls – What Horse You Rode In On
See above and also, a Chicago band Tart may not be familiar with.
Nickel Creek – Can’t Complain
I played this one because Tart doesn’t like bluegrass and alt-country enough.
Nurses – Technicolor
Portland band, really nice guys, great music.
Pigeon John – Money Back Guarantee
Tart doesn’t listen to enough hip-hop so what better way to sneak a song in then with a Pixies sample!
Dismemberment Plan – Gyroscope
Another D.C. track and an awesome band Tart needs to know and love.
Rival Schools – Favorite Star
I’m not sure if Tart is familiar with Walter Schrieffels and his body of music
Against Me! – Baby, I’m an Anarchist
Because Tart is a Vulgar Socialist and Statist. But I still love her regardless!
Archers of Loaf – Plumb Line
I chose this track for exposure and because she’s an indie rocker, and nothings gonna stop her.
Tom Lehrer – Masochism Tango
I found this track appropriate because she likes to over share on twitter sometimes, but that’s fine with me.
