Young Hillary Clinton

My girlfriend likes Hillary Clinton, so she won’t think this is funny at all, but I laughed out loud at the end and I think anyone following the race will too.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds Double Bootleg

May 28th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Music

I have been way too preoccupied with life and I have been slacking on my posting duties. So I figured the best way to get into the rhythm of posting and to make up for missing a week or two of updates is to bring you the and the Bad Seeds double .

The sound quality is pretty damn good with the levels equal but I have to say, ’s vocals sound a little drunken or just very un-refined. A perfect example of this is during the Velvet Underground’s “All Tomorrows Parties” where Mr. Cave sounds 3 sheets in the wind. It really makes me want to go sing karaoke songs of either The Velvet Underground or .

This music is all early stuff that I was unfamiliar with before I came across these bootlegs and I haven’t quite formed an opinion on the material yet.

Enjoy the shows and thanks for reading…

Decemberists Show Review

May 27th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Music

Date: 5/24/08

Venue: Les Schwab Amphitheater, Bend OR

Bands: Death Cab for Cutie, The ,

(for the uninitiated) are a husband and wife duo, drums and keys respectively, and there style could be called pop if you wanted to lump them in with a million and a half terrible and uninteresting bands, but we don’t want to do that now do we? They had a cello and violin accompaniment and it helped fill out the sound. They played mostly hits off of the new record and played well, but I just couldn’t get into the music. I have never really been a fan of the band but I did watch the whole set so that means something right?.

I have to say, the live is a pretty darn good experience and I recommend it to anyone even if you don’t like them, because if you don’t like them, it just means you haven’t heard enough of them. Even if all you really listen to is punk or metal I emplore you to give the a try, their best track was definitely “culling of the fold” and the drummer and bass player went all through the crowd and the made an impromptu play in the middle of the crowd about the indians and the settlers of Bend . The were all in all the best showmanship I’ve seen out of band in years besides all the Obama handjob they gave about halfway through their set, though I guess I can’t blame them as they got to play to 75,000 people. On a related note, check out this Wonkette article where they claim Barry Obama’s 75,000 person rally was full of people only present for the and promptly left after the set.

On now to Death Cab, they were super tight and spot on musically, but I feel it’s almost so polished and that they almost seem to be playing to a clicktrack or something and have completely lost feeling. I still enjoyed the show but I decided to lay on a blanket and pig out on nachos, a pretzel and a snow cone. How many venues serve food these days besides stadiums?

Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull Review

May 23rd, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Unclassifiable

When I found out that the last crusade was made 19 years ago I realized just how old I am getting. But I’m not as old as a 65 year old Harrison Ford.

Right off the bat I want you to know that there are some people leaving the theaters unhappy, I personally love it and let me tell you why.

The lighting. Steven Spielberg really knows his stuff with lighting and uses it to enhance moods and define shots.  The Shots. There are some really beautiful shots of the Peruvian jungles among other things. The action sequences. There are two major action sequences and they are both finely edited and feature some comic relief.

Some people have complained about it looking fake but I found it to look more realistic than any of the Pirate’s movies. That said it is hard to tell what is real and what is fake.

As far as the plot is concerned it’s more of a temple of doom type story rather than an epic like "Raiders" or "Crusade". I found the story to perform quite nicely although at times when you think about how you can "do anything with special effects", it seems kind silly that couldn’t have been even over the top but I guess that is what the pirate movies are for.

All in al I give Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull 4/5 stars or a thumbs up or whatever you want to call it.

If you like the Decemberists you should check out…

I’m scared to post Deathcab and tracks because it’s a little too high profile for me and I don’t want to invite any hassles even though I’m just trying to help bands find new fans.

So I decided to make an alternatives kind of post. While I don’t write about mellow music all too often there are some bands worth a mention. These bands in particular share a few common things, namely the non-rock band instrumentation and the anachronistic styles of yesteryear. I’m pretty new to the first couple of bands. but I’ve been a fan for some time.

The Felice Brothers

Tip Your Way

Past the Moon

The Dodos

Joe’s Waltz

Sun Kil Moon

I kind of had my back up against a wall when I was picking out my track for this piece as all but one track was under 5 minutes.

Unlit Hallway

This guys is probably a huge influence on all of these bands and especially the . This music is not for the squeamish or faint of heart as most of the lyrics are rated R but nothing really offending.

I’m going to see the Decemberists on Saturday

May 20th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Music

Kind of a bold title for an “extreme music” zine but really, the focus of this publication is quality. And the really are quality all around and they kind of possibly unintentionally have a element to themselves. While I do feel it’s kind of weird that Colin Meloy made a solo record of songs, I’m still very excited to see them pull this off live.

is the headliner and I have mixed feeling about them. I really enjoyed a couple of their records but the newest ones are lacking something that I can’t put my finger on. I swear it’s not because I was into them when they were underground and now that they are popular there is obligatory backlash, I just really a couple albums and nothing else they put out really give me the same feelings. Perhaps I am associating the music with memories and confusing it with actually really liking the band.

My girlfriend thinks they are selling out but I have a feeling they are making the records they want to with little or no pressure from labels to pop it up.

Rogue Wave is a band I have never heard of and never would have checked out unless they were opening for a band I like, and that is just the case here. I typed them into the last.fm player, listened to the whole song and I can’t remember what they sounded like but I wasn’t too impressed.

The show is taking place in a city in called Bend. Somehow this city has grown to 80,000 people and gets better concerts than Salem though I haven’t seen to much of the town to really know what is so special about the place cept the kids there love to party.

Anyway, if you live in or really like to drive, the show is on May 24th  at the Les Schwab Amphitheater and starts at 6:30. My girlfriend said there are 6 bands playing but I only see 4 anywhere I look. Modest Mouse and The National are playing the Next night and I wish I could stay and see the National but oh well.

I really wanted to post ′s of the bands playing but I feel they are too high profile to post anything by them. So tomorrow I am going make a post of bands to listen to if you like these bands.

Quick side note:The song “Metal Militia” but Metallica is a total Motorhead ripoff. Also, last.fm similar artists radio Metallica is pretty damn good.

So I’ve been busy

May 20th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Unclassifiable

http://www.biosmagazine.co.uk/images/content/prodpics/200804/ubuntu_1.jpg

I have spent the past week without windows vista. I just erased it from my system and installed ubuntu. I haven’t made a single post to any of my websites and I’m really behind. I just screwed around playing with ubuntu and googling for tutorials on configuring every single little corner of the "free as in speech" operating system.

I can do almost everything in ubuntu that I can do in windows with the exception of decent high end graphics and audio apps. I need photoshop and FLstudio. So I bought a copy of windows xp because vista was not using the full resources of my computer the way I saw fit.

So finally, after a couple of days of playing with xp and getting exactly how I like it, I am ready to start posting. If anyone in the music community wants to know more about linux or ubuntu let me know. I have installed a few distros in the past couple of years and can do a very small amount of troubleshooting.

So in the next couple of days you can expect new posts and plenty of tunes as I get back into the bloggers rhythm. I also have another blog that I abandoned awhile ago that I have to get going again and maybe something else.

How to Synchronize 5 Metronomes

May 18th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Unclassifiable

I know you have been watching lots of metronome videso and are no doubt bored with all of the flashy editing and faux glamour of all that metronomes have to offer. Still, I feel you must watch this one as this is the metronome to end all metronome videos. EVER.

Posting Frequency is down, but not out.

May 11th, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in Unclassifiable

Life is pretty hectic so the posts will slow down a bit. I’ll try to get some work done but right now I am learning a brand new OS so it’s making it substantially more difficult to write a post.

By this time next week I expect everything to be back to normal around here.

really paved the way for all the genre bending bands of the early 2k’s. This is pretty much ’s high point in his career in my opinion though I would consider his tour with the Flaming Lips to be up there too.

Beat Street

Ahhh the hip-hop movie. Early attempts were major suck. But we did gain “electric boogaloo” jokes for any sequel to any film ending in the number two.

So if you are feeling bored and nostalgic and are 25 or older, then watch this film.
